Refusal of care leads to dental distress

This Tooth Fairy Tuesday, it was our clinic kitty Calli's turn for some dental attention!

Calli is a "love me from a distance" kinda girl, so doing regular checks and brushing her teeth is very tricky. She doesn’t like cuddles or health checks unless they are on her terms - A.K.A almost never!

For fussy pets like ours, it's even more important to have regular dental checks. As in humans, plaque builds up naturally on the teeth. Without abrasion from brushing or dental treats to remove it, the plaque calcifies to form tartar, which can inflame the gums and lead to bacterial infections. Pets that refuse this essential daily dental care (like our friend Calli) are more likely to develop severe dental diseases, and require regular professional checks to catch these issues before they escalate.

Recently, our team had noticed Calli showing signs of dental disease. Bad breath, refraining from eating her favourite hard biscuits, and inflamed, red gums spotted when she yawned were her most prominent symptoms. She'd also stopped saying "thank you" as often when served her dinner, when she's normally very vocal!

After a dental examination, our team set to work to help restore Calli's smile. She required a scale and polish to remove plaque build up, but thankfully didn't need any extractions. Her inflamed gums indicated Gingivitis, which is currently being treated with a short course of antibiotics and pain relief.

It's now one week on since Calli's dental procedure. Our beautiful girl is much happier, her breath is better, and she's back to eating all of her biscuits again! We're happy to see her back to feeling like her old self, and we look forward to her "thank you" at every meal.
